A musical genre that originated in Austria and Germany, the waltz was widely used in Viennese salons for balls and parties for the elite, with the most famous composers being members of the Strauss family. The genre, however, was given different guises by composers from other traditions, which will be presented in "The Non Viennese Waltzby the musicians of the Amazonas Philharmonicon Thursday (August 15), 8:00 pm, at Amazonas Theater. Admission is free.
The conductor will be Otávio Simões, who explains the concert program as a way to introduce the public to other waltz traditions. "When we talk about waltzes, the public that is more familiar with classical music immediately thinks of the Strauss family, who were the kings of the waltz. But composers from other countries also reimagined the waltz, and I chose eight pieces that demonstrate these versions beyond Vienna," he points out.
The repertoire includes works by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Antonín Dvorák, Georges Bizet, Émile Waldteufel, Aram Khachaturian, Jean Sibelius, and Léo Delibes. Each work will have a short presentation by the conductor during the concert.
"We will have two famous ballet pieces by Tchaikovsky, in this case the waltz thought not for the ball, but choreographed for ballet. We will have Sibelius, a Finnish composer, with a sad waltz for theater. There is Dvorák's serenade for strings, who wrote a work with more academic structures, in which the waltz is one of the movements. The repertoire shows well the different ways the waltz was used," says Simões.
