Boi-Bumbá do Amazonas may become Brazilian Cultural Heritage

If recognized by the Advisory Council, the cultural manifestation will be registered in the Book of Registration of Celebrations.

As part of a cycle of activities that celebrates and promotes the Cultural Heritage of the Northern Region of Brazil, the Institute of National Artistic and Historical Heritage (Iphan), an entity linked to the Ministry of Culture (MinC), is holding on November 8 and 9 the 90th meeting of the Advisory Council of Cultural Heritage, in Belém (PA). During these two days of discussions, the counselors will evaluate the requests for recognition of three assets: the Marabaixo, from Amapá; the Boi Bumbá Cultural Complex from the Middle Amazon and Parintins, from Amazonas; and a geoglyph from Acre.

On the first day of the meeting, the registration of Marabaixo and of the Boi Bumbá Cultural Complex as Cultural Heritage of Brazil will be defined. The two cultural manifestations are traditional from the North region and are being highlighted for their fundamental importance as a Brazilian cultural reference.

Boi de Terreiro, Boi de Rua and Boi de Arena

There are many ways of playing that celebrate the Boi Bumbá throughout Brazil. In the North region, the folguedo has been established in a remarkable way in the regions of the Middle Amazon and Parintins (AM), mixing a series of dances, songs, drama and storyline that makes the hearts of the players and the public beat strongly and is one of the most traditional and recognized cultural expressions of the country.

With influences from the Jesuit missions, adding indigenous and black references and also from other regions, such as the Northeast, the Bois are characterized by strong elements marked in the transmission of the folguedo, in the construction of social identities and in the intense involvement of the communities in the preparation of its three formats - Boi de Arena, Boi de Terreiro, and Boi de Rua - and the countless knowledge that make up the so-called Boi Bumbá Complex of the Middle Amazonas and Parintins. If recognized by the Advisory Council, the cultural manifestation will be registered in the Celebrations Register Book.

Cultural Heritage Advisory Council

The Cultural Heritage Advisory Council is Iphan's highest decision-making collegiate body for issues related to tangible and intangible heritage. There are 22 councilors representing the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Cities, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Environment, the Brazilian Institute of Museums (Ibram), the International Council of Monuments and Sites (Icomos), the Institute of Architects of Brazil (IAB), the Brazilian Archaeological Society (SAB), the Brazilian Association of Anthropology (ABA), and 13 other representatives of the civil society, with special knowledge in Iphan's fields of action.
