About 700 wild animals were rescued in Manaus in 2019

Among the main species rescued are boa constrictors, iguanas, wallabies and birds in general

The Institute of Environmental Protection of Amazonas (Ipaam) has rescued at least 699 animals in 2019, according to the Fauna Management (GFAU) of the Body. Among the main species rescued are boa constrictors, iguana, mucura and birds in general.

The rescued species that were healthy were returned to nature. The animals that needed specific care were sent to the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), in which they received the necessary care and only then returned to their natural habitat.

For 2020, the rescue actions of Ipaam will gain reinforcements with new instruments that the body acquired in late 2019. "The idea is to increasingly effect rescue actions this year. Our team is increasingly attentive to calls from the population. The aim is to protect the fauna and avoid, for example, that animals are run over in urban roads or suffer any kind of accident, which often occurs in the urban area of Manaus ", explained Marcelo Garcia, manager of Fauna Ipaam.

Garcia also reinforced that, due to the frequent number of calls requesting the rescue of wild animals in residences, it is important that the community does not try to perform the rescue without instruction from the competent agencies, which can be harmful to both.

"There is a very high possibility of animals escaping to residences located in green areas, so we instruct them not to perform rescue or containment, especially if there is suspicion that the animal is poisonous," he said.

The Institute's Fauna Management informs that it does not rescue domestic animals, but that all calls in the service channels are answered and, if it is not a wild animal, the team can instruct the requester as to what should be done.

To request the rescue of wild animals, citizens can call Ipaam's Fauna Management at the number: (92) 2123-6739.
