Created to attract investments to combat deforestation, the Amazon Fund will complete 11 years in June 2019. Learn a little more about the program managed by the Ministry of Environment and the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES):
What is the Amazon Fund?
The Amazon Fund raises donations from national and international institutions to provide non-reimbursable funding for actions to prevent, monitor, and combat deforestation in the Legal Amazon, and to strengthen the sustainable use of forest resources in Brazil and other tropical countries.
In what areas does the program operate?
The Amazon Fund develops projects in the areas of public forest management and protected areas; environmental control, monitoring and inspection; sustainable forest management; economic activities developed from the sustainable use of vegetation; ecological and economic zoning, land use planning and land tenure regularization; conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity; and recovery of deforested areas. In addition, 20% of the resources can support projects in other Brazilian biomes and in other tropical countries.
What have the Fund's achievements been in these 10 years?
Since its creation, the Fund has supported 100 projects, disbursing a total of R$ 954 million. Between 2009 and 2017, the deforestation rate in the Legal Amazon fell by 11% and the area of federal Conservation Units increased by 90%. Currently, 190 Conservation Units are supported; management is strengthened in 41 million hectares of protected areas; 18 million hectares of forest areas have sustainable management and 142 thousand people benefit from sustainable production activities.
Who participates in the fund?
Currently, Petrobras, and the governments of Norway and Germany are the main donors of the Amazon Fund. In December 2017, for example, the two European countries donated R$ 271.2 million. In total, the fund's support already reaches about R$ 4.6 billion (US$ 1.2 billion).
