The son of a clown and a contortionist, Dedé Santana was raised in the circus. When he was only three months old, he performed for the first time on his mother's lap. As a circus artist he has been a clown, acrobat, trapeze artist, and even performed in the "Globe of Death".
In the early 60's, Dedé, still young, went to Rio de Janeiro to try a career in cinema. When he didn't get the job he so much wanted, he ended up taking a job as a janitor in a theater. Soon he started working as an usher and, one day, the main actor in a play was absent and there was no one to replace him. As he had commented that he had worked in a circus, the director eventually invited him to try his hand at playing the character. His performance was considered excellent and he became a regular in the show.
Invited by comedian Arnaud Rodrigues, he participated in programs on the now-defunct TV Tupi. In the 1970s, he began to make the most successful program of his career, Os Trapalhões. He acted with Didi, Zacarias, and Mussum. Besides the program, the four starred in several films.
