People can buy directly from the fishermen pieces such as filet, belly and carcass. Action contributes to managed fishing and income generation for families.
The management of pirarucu in Conservation Units (UC) of the Amazon is, today, one of the most important activities for sustainable development and income generation for riverside communities in the state. The fish originated from these activities already reaches the table of the Amazonas citizens through the pirarucu fairs promoted by the fishermen in partnership with the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation (FAS) e Amazon Fund/BNDES.
This Friday (6), starting at 7 a.m., another edition of the fair will take place at FAS' headquarters, at Rua Álvaro Maia, 351, Parque Dez neighborhood, in the South-Central Zone of the capital. It is promoted by the Association of Residents and Users of the Mamirauá Reserve (Amurmam), with the support of FAS. Will be marketed, by fishermen, pirarucus from rivers and lakes located within the Sustainable Development Reserve (SDR) Mamirauá, in the rural area of Fonte Boa, 678 kilometers from Manaus, in the region of Mid-Solimões.
Pieces of pirarucu such as carcass, belly and filet cuts will be available at prices of R$ 5, R$ 14 and R$ 18, respectively. The sale of fish directly with the fishermen contributes to stimulate the growth of managed fishing within the Conservation Units and generates direct income to families, by not requiring the performance of middlemen and distributors. All the profit from the pirarucu trade at the fair stays with the fishermen, stimulating fair trade and community empowerment.
Moreover, the whole action is authorized by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) and the State Department of Environment (Sema), with support from the Bolsa Floresta Program (BPF), through the Amazon Fund/BNDES.
Pirarucu 'online
Besides the traditional physical pirarucu fair in FAS, lovers of the taste of Amazonian fish will now have a novelty, a channel to buy pirarucu directly from fishermen. It is the virtual pirarucu store, which will also be launched this Friday (5) through a partnership between the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation and the startup Onisafra.
That's right. Over the Internet, at the site of Onisafra websitewebsite, where there is already a virtual store for the sale of regional products, such as fruits and vegetables, a channel will be available for selling pirarucu. The customer accesses the site, requests the quantity of pirarucu desired, makes a credit card purchase, and picks up the merchandise at a scheduled date and place. The bridge between the customer, Onisafra and the fishermen is made by FAS.
