The Amazonas Jazz Festival will have a free academic program

The Festival returns to the state's cultural calendar totally reformulated, bringing together great names of Brazilian instrumental music with the elite of world jazz. The line-up includes more than 50 attractions, including 24 from other countries

The tenth edition of the Amazonas Jazz Festivalwhich takes place from March 21 to 29, in Manaus, will offer more than 20 options of lectures, master classes and free workshops aimed at professionals and students in the areas of music, dance, scenography, communication, cultural production, among others. Those interested can register as of January 20 on the event's website www.festivalamazonasjazz.com.br.

With the academic program, the event held by the State Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy, seeks to expand its scope and economic potential, contributing to the technical improvement of various professional segments of culture, as explained by the secretary Marcos Apolo Muniz.

"Since the first edition, Amazonas Jazz has been guided by the excellence of its programming. If on the one hand the event started to attract an audience eager for jazz shows never before presented with such dynamism in the Amazon, on the other hand, it contributed to the training of music students, audio operators, technicians in maintenance and repair of musical instruments, among other trades in the area", he says.

The educational activities have limited vacancies and will be held at the Palácio da Justiça Cultural Center, located at Eduardo Ribeiro Avenue, 901, Downtown; at the Teatro da Instalação, located at Frei José dos Inocentes Street, Downtown; and at the Escola Superior de Artes e Turismo da Universidade do Estado do Amazonas (ESAT/UEA), at 1728 Leonardo Malcher Avenue, Praça 14 de Janeiro.

Speakers

Among the professionals who will give the workshops, lectures, and master classes are prominent names of the global music scene, such as the American composer and instrumentalist Ed Sarath, founder of the jazz department at the University of Michigan, as well as of the Improvisation and Contemplative Studies Program. The artist will give a lecture on improvisation as a structuring element in the elaboration of the musical discourse within the jazz idiom, a theme addressed in one of his books, "Music Theory Through Improvisation".

The American trombone virtuoso and arranger John Fedchock also figures in the festival's academic program. With two Grammy nominations and a successful career spanning more than three decades as one of New York's leading jazz artists, he was a longtime member of the legendary Woody Herman Big Band, for which he was the arranger and principal soloist. Fedchock will give a masterclass with topics on trombone interpretation in jazz.

The audience will also be able to participate in a masterclass on Latin Jazz presented by the members of Triumvirate, a Latin music group led by Puerto Rican Edsel Gomez, whose name has already been nominated for a Grammy. The group's drummer, Robby Ameen, is also considered one of the main names in the genre, author of a classic study of Afro-Cuban rhythm applied to the drums, entitled "Funkifying the Clave".

Among the national representatives is Marcelo Coelho, instrumentalist, composer, and researcher from São Paulo, who will give a lecture on Creative Economy, highlighting the subsidies for a strategic action in the artistic field in face of the challenges posed by the new economy.

Resident in New York, musician Mauricio Zottarelli, one of the most active Brazilian drummers in the world and elected by "The Best Jazz Of 2016", in the list "The 38th Annual Jazz Station", as one of the best drummers in activity at the moment, will give a workshop on the use of Brazilian rhythm in the contemporary jazz language.

The recording and audio engineer Clément Zular, one of the great names in national audio, is also one of the highlights of the program, with a workshop on audio capture for audiovisual and streaming transmissions.

Variety

The academic program themes range from music-specific subjects aimed at a specialized audience to culture-related themes that are related to jazz in a more comprehensive way.

This includes the lecture "Jazz: Criticism and Journalism", to be given by journalist and music critic Carlos Calado, a contributor to the newspapers Folha de São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Paulo and Valor Econômico. With several books published, among them, "Tropicália: the History of a Musical Revolution", "Jazz as a Spectacle", and "Jazz Live", Calado has covered countless jazz festivals throughout his career, which spans more than three decades closely following the Brazilian phonographic production.

Another lecture is "The Body at the Service of Subjectivity", which will bring to Manaus the renowned dancer and choreographer Rui Moreira. His career is marked by the performance in Grupo Corpo (MG) and in the companies Cisne Negro (SP), Balé da Cidade de São Paulo (SP), Seráquê? (MG) and Azanie (France).

Currently coordinating the Rui Moreira Cia de Danças, the artist, who has more than 30 years of experience in the cultural sector, also signs the choreography based on an indigenous ritual from the Ticuna ethnic group that will be presented by Corpo de Dança do Amazonas (CDA) in the opening show of the Amazonas Jazz Festival.

The festival

In its tenth edition, the Amazonas Jazz Festival returns to the state's cultural calendar completely redesigned, bringing together big names in Brazilian instrumental music with the world's jazz elite. The line-up includes more than 50 attractions, 24 of them from other countries.

Besides concerts at the Teatro Amazonas, the program includes shows at the Abaré Floating Theatre, film screenings and photo exhibitions on the theme at the Casa do Jazz, located next to the Teatro Amazonas, and an itinerary of musical presentations in bars and restaurants in the capital.

Tickets for the shows are already on sale at the theater box office and on the Bilheteria Digital website for R$ 20 to R$ 80.
