Largo de São Sebastião receives opening show of Sustainable Turn of Manaus

The largest sustainability festival in Latin America, the Sustainable Turn takes place for the fifth consecutive year in the Amazon capital.

Jazz classics, MPB and blues pack the opening show of the Virada Sustentável Manaus 2019, this Thursday (25/07), at 8 pm, at the Largo de São Sebastião, under the command of the Amazonas Band. The event is open to the public.

Largest sustainability festival in Latin America, Sustainable Turn takes place for the fifth consecutive year in the Amazon capital. About 160 activities will occupy the streets, public spaces, parks and cultural centers of the city, from Friday (26) to Sunday (28), with the proposal to mobilize the population for a "turn" of consciousness. More than 350 volunteers will participate in the actions.

"During the opening, the public will have the opportunity to learn about the program and get to know wonderful initiatives that are transforming the city. In addition, it is a moment of celebration, which brings as a pillar the democratization of access to culture," says Paula Gabriel, the mobilization coordinator.

For the concert, the Amazonas Band's conductor, Rui Carvalho, has prepared a diversified repertoire, which mixes national compositions such as "Palco" and "Aquele Abraço", by Gilberto Gil, and international ones such as "Morning Dance", by Jay Beckenstein; "Slowvisor", by Eddie Palmieri; "The Happy Song", by Bob Mintzer; and "Superstition", by Stevie Wonder. This will be the orchestra's third performance to open the festival.

"We will have the honor, once again, to be part of the opening of the Sustainable Turn of Manaus, a movement that puts sustainability at the center of the debates and highlights culture as a tool for social transformation, leaving an important legacy for the city," says conductor Rui Carvalho.

Previously held at the Teatro Amazonas, the opening concert will now take place at Largo de São Sebastião to reach a larger audience. The space will receive a special structure, bringing together visual arts, technology, music and audiovisual, which will be installed until the last day of the festival.

Among the highlights are five graffiti panels that promise to draw the population's attention to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) elaborated by the United Nations (UN) to indicate how nations can achieve social, economic, and environmentally sustainable development. These goals encourage actions in five crucially important areas, the so-called five P's, which will be represented in the works: people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership. The panels, by the artists Denis L.D.O and Cria RSK, were produced in a sustainable way, incorporating recyclable materials.

In addition to graffiti, the SDGs will be projected on the facade of historic buildings located around the Largo using the 'video mapping' technique. The projections, created by visual artist Rodrigo Duarte, will also bring compositions that refer to the theme sustainability and phrases of impact to promote reflection on how everyone can do their part to build a better world.
