With an aesthetic full of symbolism, the show "Mater Dolorosa will premiere at the 22nd Amazon Opera Festival (FAO)this Saturday (25), 8:00 pm, at the Amazonas Theaterand will be presented again on the 29th.
Átila de Paula directs the show, which promises to present a work that leads the audience to a very current reflection, by mixing repertoire from the 17th and 18th centuries with a completely innovative approach.
Rereading
Proposing a critical reflection on the global crisis of plastic production and pollution, "Mater Dolorosa" is born from the re-reading of the immortal context of "Stabat Mater", by the Italian composer Giovanni Pergolesi, which musically portrays Mary's pain when she sees her son Jesus on the cross.
According to director Átila de Paula, the format of the presentation is pastiche, a common practice in art that cuts out works and mixes styles, in a kind of re-reading of the work.
"The pasticci, as they were known, were true exercises in inventiveness in 18th century theaters. Something like a pot-pourride today, where famous excerpts from various operas were arranged to create a new narrative. Mater Dolorosa' is precisely an inventive creation of a show, based on varied works," he said.
The plot of the show appropriates the events of the Passion of Christ and proposes a new view, in several aspects, of Mary's pain when she sees her son suffering. "We transport all the biblical mythology to a contemporary symbolism, where Mother Nature relates her pain when being destroyed by her creation, humanity," added the artist.
Reflection
De Paula also points out that the entire scenography is based on an aesthetic full of symbolism. "Mater Dolorosa' reflects complex social, loving, and conflicting relationships, plunging into a deep anguish that fatally reveals the end of Man and Nature," he describes.
To bring this work to life, two soloists take the stage - soprano Dhijana Nobre and mezzo-soprano Talita Azevedo. Both give voice to the unique character of Mother Nature, through the music of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater," a sacred cantata on which "Mater Dolorosa" is mostly based.
"Man's voice and body, in turn, will be represented by the Experimental Ballet of the Amazon Dance Corps, dramatizing the various needs of the human being: conflict, love, social and fun. Mater' is a challenge to an entire multi-talented team of artists who, starting from a central plot idea, give life to an unprecedented work", the director celebrates.
