Awarded at the 2018 Queen Elisabeth of Belgium Competition, the young mezzo-soprano Eva Zaïcik will perform in Manaus with the Amazonas Philharmonic, this Thursday (10/31), at the Amazonas Theaterat 20h. The concert, with free admission, will feature works by French composer Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) and is part of the Guaraná XVI Series. The rating is for 10 years.
Conductor Marcelo de Jesus, who will conduct the concert, explains that the partnership between Amazonas Philharmonic and Queen Elisabeth Competition keeps bringing to Manaus the revelations of the international lyrical scene. "For almost five years, we have had this partnership in which we have been able to get young talents, winners and award winners of recent editions of the competition, to perform for our audience," she points out.
Eva Zaïcik will sing "Les nuits d'été (The Summer Nights)", by Hector Berlioz, considered to be the romantic composer who defined French symphonic music, according to conductor Marcelo de Jesus. "A great composer and one of the greatest orchestrators in the history of music, being a reference for all composers."
"Les nuits d'été" is a song cycle by Berlioz for voice and orchestra, based on the poems of Théophile Gautier. "The songs portray the progress of love through to loss and renewal. Berlioz composed for piano and then did the orchestration. It is a work that is very often played today in orchestral repertoires around the world," states the conductor.
Next will be presented "Sinfonia Fantástica", only with the Amazonas Filarmônica, a work that broke with the symphonic classical structure. Also entitled "Episode in the Life of an Artist," the work tells the story of a young musician in despair over an unrequited love who poisons himself with opium, having visions that make up the five parts of the story.
"It is a completely atypical symphony, firstly because it makes what is called programmatic music, which tells a story, not in the literal sense, but in the realm of sensations. And, instead of four movements, used in most classical symphonies, Berlioz presents five movements, each one being an artist's vision transformed into music," says Marcelo de Jesus.
The work is divided into the movements "Reveries and Passions," "A Ball," "A Country Scene," "March to the Scaffold," and "A Dream of a Sabbath Night. "In this last movement, the performer finds himself on a witches' sabbath, and here Berlioz places screams, laughter. The theme of this movement was part of the soundtrack of the film 'The Enlightened One,' becoming quite famous. This work by Berlioz presents many innovations, and is a milestone in the history of Western music," declares Marcelo de Jesus.
Conversation with the artists
This Thursday's concert will be the debut of the project "Conversations with the Artists", starting at 6:30pm, in the hall of Teatro Amazonas.
"On Thursday concerts we will now have a relaxed chat with the audience before the performance. In this conversation, we talk a little about the work that will be presented, curiosities of the history of music, and much more, always with a conductor or a musician, or with the guest artist," explains the conductor.
In this premiere, Marcelo de Jesus himself will talk to the audience about characteristics of the work "Sinfonia Fantástica". To participate, just arrive at the Theater at the time indicated. The limit for the group in the Hall is 30 people.
