Starting next Thursday, May 9, the Amazonian public can check out the exhibition "Rui Machado: a trajectory of colors. Curated by the team Amazonian Museum from Amazonas Federal University (Ufam), together with the artist Rui Machadothe exhibition aims to present the trajectory of Rui through significant clippings of his life, which integrate individual and collective memories. The exhibition will be held at the Museu Amazônico, located at Rua Ramos Ferreira, 1036, Centro, and admission is free.
The show brings to the public personal objects such as awards, medals, CD covers and calendars signed by Rui, as well as iconic paintings from several moments of his career. Part of the indigenous archaeological and ethnographic collection donated to the Museu Amazônico and the bibliographical collection, donated to the museum's Sector Library, also make up the exhibition.
According to the Museum's director, Dysson Teles, "the best and modest way to honor the trajectory of this Amazonian caboclo is the one the Museum is paying at this moment. The exhibition 'Rui Machado: a path of colors' visually synthesizes the stages of production the artist went through, his evolution, and his importance to the consecration of Amazonian culture.
Vernissage
The pre-launch of the exhibition takes place on Wednesday, May 8, at 7pm, at the Museu Amazônico, and will be attended by guests and representatives of the state's academic and cultural institutions, besides Ufam's rector, Sylvio Puga. According to the rector, "Rui Machado is Amazonas. Rui Machado is Brazil. Rui Machado is a heritage of our land that makes each one of us proud, for in his rich work we see ourselves portrayed and welcomed.
Rui Machado
Rui Machado is an artist and poet. He was born in Manaus in 1956, and his relationship with the arts started early, with various manifestations, from drawing and writing to sculptures. His first art exhibition was in 1982, called "Travessia", in the hall of the Teatro Amazonas, as part of the Hahnemann Project. In 1984, he released his first book of poetry, entitled "Angels and Mysteries.
He has, to date, 24 awards and honors. In music, he has more than 50 compositions, but only received his first award in 2017, at the 6th Amazon Music Festival, in first place, with the song "Remando Estrelas", made in partnership with Valdo Cavalcante.
Part of these awards can be seen in the exhibition, as well as some of his ethnographic and archaeological works donated to the Amazonian Museum. According to museologists Lucimery Ribeiro and Mayara Monteiro, "Rui, by donating items from his private collection to the Museu Amazônico, transforms them into a public collection. The act of donating objects with significant historical, artistic, and cultural value brings back two important features in the history of museums: the change from private to public access, and the understanding of the museum's social function".
Donation of the bibliographical collection
Rui Machado's relationship with the Sector Library of the Museu Amazônico (BSMA) is an old one. Even before exhibiting his work at the Museum, he was a frequent visitor of the Library and gave it numerous relevant publications. At this moment, the artist shows once again his generosity and affection for the BSMA, by donating his bibliographical collection about the Amazon to it. There are more than 350 books, which, like his work, have a predominantly Amazonian identity. Among them are precious works that will compose the Special Collection Series. For librarian Rosangela Martins, who is responsible for the Museum's Library, "this donation will be a valuable addition to our collection and will multiply through the minds of those who consult it".
Experiences with the artist
During the exhibition, there will be meetings and experiences with Rui Machado, as part of the Museum's educational program. The activity aims to bring the artist closer to the public, among them public school and university students, through a chat about the exhibition and related subjects inside the exhibition space.
