For the Secretary of State for Culture, Robério Braga, the celebration of the seven years of creation of the Eduardo Ribeiro House Museum honors the memory of a great transformer of the Amazon capital.
"The place preserves the history of a man who did a lot for the Amazon, and especially for our culture. An example is the legacy he left us, contributing to the construction of the Teatro Amazonas, the Sete de Setembro Avenue iron bridge, the beginning of the Palace of Justice works, the Mocó Reservoir, among others. That is why a museum in his honor, to perpetuate his history, also belongs to all of us", he concluded.
Knowledge and preservation of the local memory
The Casa Eduardo Ribeiro Museum receives approximately 10 thousand people per year, from tourists to students interested in the History of the Amazon, who, consequently, become interested in the history of the great icon, the maranhense Eduardo Ribeiro. In a short time, from 1892 to 1896, he governed Amazonas and accomplished great things.
"Visiting the museum is a real walk through local history. It is as if we were entering a 19th century house, with original furniture from that time. And one of the things that most impresses those who visit is Eduardo Ribeiro's rocking chair, in which he was found dead, with a mosquito net wrapped around his neck," said Aline Santana, who has managed the museum for seven years. She also highlights the Victoria model carriage, from 1900, that exists in the museum, a replica of the one that belonged to the governor.
During the visit, it is also possible to learn a little about the 'uses' of the place, which was the base for the Bretislau de Castro Family, who lived in the house until 1961, under the leadership of Maranhão's Bretislau de Castro, engineer and state deputy. Soon after, the place served as headquarters of the General Health Department (SUCAM) until 1970, remaining abandoned and exposed to bad weather for many years.
It was then that, in 2002, the place was given over to the State, which reformed it, via the Secretary of Culture, over the course of six years, by means of a thorough restoration work. The space was inaugurated as a museum on March 18th 2010, for the specific purpose of recovering the city's memory and the history of medicine.
Judeth Costa, who participated in the whole process, celebrates the result of the action: "It was a joint work of restorers, architects and engineers, from the Secretary of Culture, through the Department of Historical Heritage, who did all the damage mapping, looking from the ornaments (relief elements) from the outside to the artistic and architectural elements inside the building. From there, the work of cleaning, conservation, and restoration. Everything was done very carefully, because the building was in ruins. We started practically from scratch," he said.
