The opera

First staged in 1845, "Tannhäuser" tells a story that unites the human and the divine, medieval disputes between knights, and a sinner seeking his personal redemption through love.

Based on a medieval legend, the opera is set in Thuringia in the early 13th century and tells the story of the knight Tannhäuser, who, after spending a season at the court of the goddess Venus, decides to return to the company of mortals. As soon as he returns to Earth, he meets his old friends, who take him to a tournament of troubadours, for whom love is a sublime and high ideal; he, however, is a defender of carnal love, and when he is repressed by the others, he needs to go to the Vatican and ask the Pope for forgiveness for his sin.
