With compositions inspired by folk themes from various countries, the Amazonas Chamber Orchestra (OCA) presents, on Tuesday (11/12), the concert "Folk Fantasyat the Amazonas Theater. The presentation, which is part of the Guaraná XVI Series, will feature the Rio de Janeiro violinist Priscila Ratoand will have free admission.
Conductor Marcelo de Jesus emphasizes that the concert is a journey through folk music.
"We selected composers who were inspired by folk themes and developed their works based on their thoughts and ideas," he says. "The songs travel through various countries and carry the personality of each composer, with different ways of seeing folklore, a great fantasy. We have, for example, a German composer who writes about a Scottish feeling; a Hungarian who writes about works by a Frenchman, with Spanish themes," adds the maestro.
Marcelo also highlights the participation of soloist Priscila Rato, spalla of the Bahia Symphony Orchestra.
"It is very important to have her in this concert with OCA, a respected musician who also has a very strong academic work," he says. "In addition to this exchange of experiences with the musicians of the orchestra, Priscila will give a master class for the students of the Liceu (de Artes e Ofícios Claudio Santoro)," she says.
Repertoire
The program includes "Scottish Serenade", a work by German composer Max Bruch, about a Scottish feeling; "Bright Fantasy Carmem", by Hungarian Jenö Hubay, who writes about the famous opera by Frenchman Georges Bizet, with Spanish themes; "Primavera portenha", by Argentine Astor Piazzolla, based on Vivaldi's "Four Seasons", with transcription for string orchestra by Russian Leonid Desyatnikov.
The evening will also include an Amazon premiere of the work "Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis", by English composer Ralph Vaugh William. According to Marcelo de Jesus, the public will see the orchestra in a different way.
"It will be the first time that we will perform this work in Amazonas. And it is a very interesting work, because it divides the orchestra into three groups (soloists, orchestra 1 and 2) and manages to create stereophonic sounds without them sounding different. People will only perceive it as if the sound were moving from one side to the other," he explains.
Marcelo also notes that presenting novelties is a characteristic of OCA. "It is in OCA's DNA to always present different content in the repertoire so that the audience has a different perception of listening."
In 2019, the OCA is celebrating the centennial of Claudio Santoro and includes, in all concerts, a work by the Amazonian composer. In this Tuesday's performance, the orchestra will perform "My love said goodbye to me (Song for Gisèle)," theme of the opera "Alma," which premiered this year at the Amazon Opera Festival.
"It is within the idea of the program, because it has a lot of modinha, of the Brazilian folk lyricism, it has the melodic character of Brazilian music," she points out.
