In one year, Manaus gained more than 15,000 inhabitants and remains the seventh most populous city in Brazil.
Brazil has 208.4 million inhabitants, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The study, released on Wednesday (29), estimates a population growth rate of 0.82% between 2017 and 2018. The reference date of the work is July 1, 2018.
São Paulo remains the most populous city in the country, with 12.2 million inhabitants. In the sequence come Rio de Janeiro (6.7 million inhabitants), Brasília and Salvador (around 3.0 million inhabitants each). Among the least populated municipalities are Serra da Saudade (MG), with 786 inhabitants, followed by Borá (SP), with 836 inhabitants, and Araguainha (MT), with 956 inhabitants.
Furthermore, the study shows that the three most populous states are in the Southeast region, while the five least populous are in the North region. São Paulo has 21.9% of the country's population and follows as the leader in the number of inhabitants per state. On the other hand, Roraima is the least populous, with 576.6 thousand inhabitants, 0.3% of the total population.
The municipal population estimates are one of the parameters used by the Federal Audit Court in the calculation of the States and Municipalities Participation Fund and are a reference for several social, economic, and demographic indicators.
The estimates of the resident population for Brazilian municipalities were calculated based on the Population Projection (2018 Revision), released last July 25. This revision incorporated the Venezuelan immigrants in the state of Roraima, of which 99% were concentrated in the municipalities of Boa Vista and Pacaraima.
