The beauty and charm come from the wild aspect and the feeling of isolation provided by the natural environment of the Amazon. The attractions, set against thousand-year-old rocks, are surrounded by the intense green of the forest. The visitor has the sensation of being lost in an oasis in the middle of the largest tropical forest in the world.
History
The territory of Presidente Figueiredo originally belonged to the municipalities of Novo Airão and Itapiranga. The first population settlements in these poles date back to 1657, to where the municipality of Manaus is today, and 1668, where Novo Airão is today. On December 10, 1981, through Constitutional Amendment No. 12, the municipality of Presidente Figueiredo was created, with territories separated from Novo Airão (its part in the far east, bordering Manaus) and from Itapiranga (Vila and surroundings of Balbina), as well as adjacent areas of Silves and Urucará.
The installation of the municipality took place with the general elections of 1982 and, consequently, with the inauguration of the mayor and councilmen in January 1983. The name of the municipality is a tribute to the former president of the province of Amazonas in the Imperial Colony, João Figueiredo.
Access
The municipality of Presidente Figueiredo is 107 kilometers from Manaus, by means of a paved highway, BR-174. This highway also connects the capital of Roraima, Boa Vista, and links Brazil to Venezuela.
Curiosity
The name of the town is a tribute to João Batista de Figueiredo Tenreiro Aranha, first president (former imperial governor) of the province of Amazonas. The then president of the Republic, João Batista de Oliveira Figueiredo, would have rejected the homage when the town was created on December 10, 1981. The installation took place with the general elections of 1982 and the inauguration of the mayor and councilmen in 1983.
