The Government of Amazonas, through the State Secretariat of Culture (SEC), opened inscriptions for the Basic Course of the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras). The classes will take place from March 18 to June 3, at the Cine Teatro Guarany.

The course is 80 hours long and will be given by professor Marcelo Costa. Classes will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 2:30pm to 4:30pm.

"It is a basic course, through which the person learns to communicate through signs. We also apply some signs directed to the area of culture, but our function is to make people literate," explains Marssicléa Brito, from the SEC's Advisory Office for Inclusion of Disabled People.

Marssicléa adds that there is the possibility of a continuation of the level still in 2019. "Our intention is, at the end of the basic course, to open an intermediate class in the second semester to improve communication and fluency of these students," she said.

SEC offers the Basic Course of Libras, free of charge, since 2012. It has already graduated 687 students. The service, according to the state secretary of Culture, Marcos Apolo Muniz, is part of the inclusion actions developed by the body. The goal, according to him, is to promote the access of people with disabilities, under equal conditions, to cultural manifestations in the state.

Among the actions taken, in this line, are the translation of shows and the guided tour in Libras; the audiodescription service; assembly of a special area for people with disabilities, in major events such as the Manaus Samba Schools Parade; visitation for students with Down syndrome or autism; and accessibility actions in the secretariat's festivals.

An important achievement in this area is the Braille Library of Amazonas, which will complete 20 years of existence. At the site, SEC has books in Braille and films with audio description, besides the service of recording audiobooks, as well as computer and music courses (guitar and keyboard).
