Cine Video presents films in honor of women's day

All sessions are free, starting at 12:30pm and take place in the Rio Negro auditorium at UFAM.

Back from the school break, the Cine Video Tarumã pays tribute to the International Women's Day with a selection of films focused on the female theme. The works deal with various themes, from the right to vote in the 70's to protests in 2012 against rape and feminicide. All sessions are free, starting at 12:30 pm and take place in the auditorium Rio Negro, located in the hall of the IFCHS, formerly ICHL, the Federal University of Amazona.

On Monday, the film shown is Divine Womenby Swedish director Petra Volpe. The feature film tells the life of the young housewife Nora (Marie Leuenberger), who lives with her husband and their two children in a small village. Until then, her life was peaceful, a quiet person whom everyone likes and who seemed unaffected by the winds of the great social movements that arose from the 1968 revolution. Until she began to fight publicly for women's right to vote, which men must decide at the polls in February 1971.

On Wednesday the 14th, the film is Women Without Men. The production is set in 1953 in Iran when an American- and British-backed coup overthrew the democratically elected prime minister, Mohammad Mossadegh, and reinstalled the Shah in power. Over the course of several days four different women from Iranian society are brought together against this backdrop of political and social turmoil. Fakhri (Arita Shahrzad), a middle-aged woman stuck in loveless marriage and who must deal with her feelings for an old crush who has just returned from America. Zarin (Orsi Toth), a young prostitute, who tries to escape the devastating situation of no longer being able to see men's faces. Munis (Shabnam Toloui), a politically aware woman, who tries to resist the seclusion imposed on her by her fanatical religious brother. Faezeh (Pegah Ferydoni), Munis' friend, who remains oblivious to the turmoil in the streets and longs only to marry her brother.

On Friday it is the turn of the documentary Daughter of Indiaby director Leslee Udwin. A group of six men rape a 23-year-old woman on a bus in December 2012 in New Delhi, and days later she dies in the hospital from severe internal injuries. Outraged by the violence, women across the country take to the streets to protest, mobilizing a worldwide wave of disgust at such an act. Intertwined with the story are the lives, values, and mentalities of the rapists with whom the filmmaker had access. A reflection on society and its values that generate such violent acts and an optimistic appeal for possible change.
