The system will rescue those who are unable to drive home and will run until February 15.
Begins to operate from zero hour this Thursday, February 1, the Disk-Pileque. The service is one of the actions being undertaken by the State Department of Traffic of Amazonas (Detran-AM)in partnership with the Association of Ambulance Drivers of the State of Amazonas (Amcaam)The aim is to reduce the accident rates caused by the combination of drinking and driving during the Carnival period.
The phone number for the Disk-Pileque is (92) 99146-9863 and it also works as WhatsApp. The system will rescue those who are not able to drive home and will work until February 15.
According to the CEO of Detran-AM, Vinicius Diniz, the expectation, with the enforcement actions and the carpooling program, is to keep at zero the number of traffic accidents in this period, as recorded in 2017.
"Several people are afraid to use the service and be fined or arrested. We want to make it clear to the driver that by using the service he won't have any kind of reprimand, on the contrary, he will be contributing to the community by avoiding driving while intoxicated, which could cause an accident along the way. And the risk of being arrested is run by those who don't call and drive while intoxicated, because we will be inspecting all areas of the city," said Vinicius Diniz.
According to him, the vehicles that will be used in the service will be at strategic points in the city, during the entire Carnival, to answer the calls from the Disk-Pileque as soon as possible. The carpooling request can be made by the driver himself or by friends, bar owners, and people responsible for carnival bands who identify intoxicated drivers.
"When we receive a call at the Disk-Pileque, a driver and a nurse go to the driver and check his or her state of drunkenness. The same person, besides having his car removed to his home, also receives medical treatment in case he needs it and it is delivered to his home with all the safety possible", explained the Disk-Pileque coordinator, Manuel Araújo.
Actions
Detran-AM also intensified its actions, putting all its apparatus on the streets, including breathalyzers and tow trucks. There are 120 servers working both in educational actions and in the enforcement of the Dry Law. The intention is to curb driving excesses, mainly dangerous driving, driving without a helmet, drunk driving, or driving without a license. The biggest reinforcement will be in the areas where the main parties take place in the city.
Drunk driving is a traffic crime, as foreseen in article 306 of the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB). The fine is R$2,934.70 and the penalty ranges from six months to three years in prison. When caught driving a car while intoxicated, the driver's license is confiscated and the driver's license may be suspended.
