Centro Cultural Usina Chaminé occupies a historic building in the Centro neighborhood. The construction dates back to 1910. It was built by the English company Manáos Improviments to serve as a sewage treatment plant, although it underwent renovation in 1993 to house the Pinacoteca do Estado.
History and Architecture
The building features a Neo-Renaissance style. A 24-meter chimney stands out on the facade. This element was built with refractory bricks and topped by a molded iron cap, which is why the site became known simply as Chaminé.
The monument is protected. Official recognition occurred in 1988. The building underwent another renovation in 2002 to integrate actions for preserving the cultural memory of Amazonas.
Spaces and Activities
The center offers various exhibitions. Permanent and temporary exhibition rooms are located on the ground floor. Espaço Criança features three environments with adapted equipment, while the outdoor area includes an arena for shows.
Schools can schedule visits. Activities are organized through the SEC Central Pedagógica. The site promotes children's workshops and puppet theater after interested institutions complete a prior booking.
