The governments of Brazil and Spain signed on Monday (24) five acts of cooperation between the two states in four different areas. The signing of the agreements occurred during the official visit of the president of the Spanish government, Mariano Rajoy, to the country. Together with a delegation of politicians and businessmen, he was received by the President of the Republic, Michel Temer, at the Planalto Palace.

The trade flow with the Spanish totaled US$ 5.2 billion last year. Owner of an investment that amounts to almost 7% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the country, Spain injected US$ 819.4 million in the Brazilian economy in the first three months of the year.

It is not only in bilateral trade that the two countries have a relationship. Since the 1990s, there has been a significant increase in Brazilian immigration to Spain, with currently around 100 thousand Brazilians living in the Mediterranean country, second only to Portugal.

Diplomacy

In relation to the formation of diplomats, the two nations agreed that there will be an exchange of information and experiences about study programs, research and training activities.

In addition, contact will be promoted between students, diplomats, professors, officials, experts and researchers. The exchange also extends to national and international publications in areas of interest to both nations and to trends and tools related to computerized education.

Economic and Commercial Cooperation

To facilitate and develop economic and commercial cooperation between the two countries, the Brazilian Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services (Mdic) and the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness signed an agreement with a series of guidelines.

Among them, exchange of information and experiences; sharing of best practices and procedures; collaboration in initiatives and projects of mutual interest and benefit; organization and participation in meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences.

Infrastructure and transportation

In this area, the ministries of Transport, Ports and Civil Aviation and the Ministry of Development of Spain signed a memorandum of understanding in the area of transport infrastructure that provides for the exchange of information, experiences and research, as well as advice and technical assistance in project preparation.

The agreement also determines cooperation in the areas of research and technological development, exchange of experts and organization of events such as meetings, symposiums, workshops and conferences.

Still within the scope of transport infrastructure, Brazil and Spain also agreed on cooperation programs and pilot projects.

Water Resources

The cooperation, signed between the Brazilian National Integration Ministry and the Spanish Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment Ministry, focuses on technical and technological areas and seeks to promote a high level of environmental protection based on sustainable development.

The document establishes a three-year work plan to promote and publicize the federal government's Cultivating Good Water program in Spain, the European Union, Latin America, and development cooperation agencies.

The plan also defines that cooperation actions will extend to the revitalization of the São Francisco River Basin, drought management, the use of non-conventional water resources, and the approximation of networks of watershed organizations from both countries.
