Show 'Cow Brave' premieres in July at Ateliê 23

The company's new show will be on every Friday and Saturday until the end of August.

Built on metaphors in a subjective reading to the viewer about someone who wishes not to accept what the other imposes as affection so as not to take the reins of life is the proposal of the new show of Ateliê 23, "Cow Bravas" (Wild Cows)which opens on July 12, at 8pm, at the company's headquarters (Rua Tapajós, 166, Centro). The production will be on every Friday and Saturday until the end of August.

Tickets will be available at the box office for R$ 30 (full price) and R$ 15 (half price for artists, students, seniors and people with special needs). Every Friday students who present proof of their studies pay R$ 5, while those who bring two paying friends will have free admission.

According to director and actor Taciano Soares, the metaphorical issue starts in the name of the show, which comes from the meaning of "wild cow" in Portugal.

"The female bull is called the wild cow, while the female bull is called the tame cow. It is the tame cow, then, the model dairy cow that man has turned into a mere consumer product, as if that were the only reason cows exist. From this, the I-lyric of the scene wishes to be a wild cow, someone who does not accept his destiny as a milk cow, who does not wish to be simply a meek cow", explains Taciano. "The show takes place in three territories: that of the mother, of affection, and of the artist, which are pointed out on stage with drawings on the set itself as, respectively, what is big and we don't reach, what takes up too much space in us, and what is hard to stay. 'Brave Cows' is the sublime desire for something good, it's about not accepting what is imposed, it's about trying and failing, but continuing to try."

Production

Ateliê 23 produces one or two new works of theater or dance every year. "Cowas Bravas" is the first premiere of 2019, the preparation and editing process took place in two months, May and June.

"It was quite fast, but intense and enough for us to develop this concept, almost philosophical, about the work. This is due to our natural movement of always being in process," comments the director of the show. "You can't deny that the work ends up being autobiographical in several layers, as has been Ateliê 23's investigation in recent years.

Renewed cast

The play has five actors in the cast. Besides Taciano, who also signs the set and shares the direction and dramaturgy with Jean Palladino, are on stage Ítalo Rui, who has worked in two productions of the company as "The Architect and Emperor of Assyria" and "Fando and Lis"; Diego Bauer, Artrupe Productions; Jôce Mendes, experienced actress who performs for the first time in Studio 23, and Julia Kahane, who is back to Manaus after training at the Casa das Artes de Laranjeiras, Rio de Janeiro.

"The renewal in the company's cast is something that greatly instigates the group, since new people move all the artists who are part of the collective to rethink methodologies, work models, and inspirations," Taciano highlights. "The result reveals a scene with new vigor, in order to cross the viewer emotionally, as is one of the group's goals with each new work."

In the technical sheet, "Vacas Bravas" counts with direction assistance from Isabela Catão, costumes by Eric Lima, who is also responsible for lettering and graphic design, and Laury Gitana, who is also in the light and scenery operation with Wilas Rodrigues, sound operator; lighting by Daniel Braz and Priscilla Lima, soundtrack by Number Teddie and collaboration of Clara Monteiro, stamps by Turenko Beça, costume making by Helena Oliveira, body provocation by Viviane Palandi and stage by Paulo Tiago.
