Remedios Church

Church of Remedios

The Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios was built on the site of an ancient Indian cemetery and was founded by Major Manoel Joaquim do Paço, who took over the government in 1818. It was destroyed by the population in 1821, in a demonstration called the Independence Revolution, which the governor did not join. Its reconstruction was promoted in 1827.

From 1851 on, the Capela dos Remédios began to serve as the Matriz, in view of the fire that had occurred in the old church the year before, and this continued for eight years.

The most radical reform occurred at the beginning of the 20th century, when the church acquired its current shape. The project was designed by the Italian architect Filintho Santoro. It is recorded that the work was not completed until 1913.

Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Church was declared a World Heritage Site by the State Government, according to Decree No. 11.037 of April 12, 1988.

The several reforms that the Church Nossa Senhora dos Remédios has gone through, especially the one that took place in the beginning of the 20th century, make it difficult to understand its original aspect. The few precise information about its architectural aspects are made possible through old photographic records, in which it is possible to see the simple appearance of the building, composed of one floor.

The Remedios Church, in its current form, has a neoclassical style, with influence from the Italian Renaissance. It is a two-story building, with a main facade with the following characteristics: smooth plaster foundation; body divided into five parts by smooth shaft pilasters; quadrangular section and Corinthian capitals.

The first floor is composed of four niches in arches and the door centralized to the facade. The upper floor is composed of five full-arch windows, the central one in stained glass, with a cross motif. The crown of the building is made by a simple cymatium, whose frieze has, in high relief, the inscription "Nossa Senhora dos Remédios", and a triangular pediment, topped by a cross, and containing a Christian symbol in its tympanum. The roof has a gable roof. Each facade has a niche on the first floor and a full arched window on the second floor. At the rear of the church, a bell tower covered by a dome can be seen. The addition at the rear of the ensemble is not original.
