São Sebastião Church

The construction of the church, under the direction of Gesualdo Machetti de Lucas, dates back to 1888. With the end of the Empire and the consequent Proclamation of the Republic, the construction suffered delays due to the cut of resources previously guaranteed by the State.

The building is in neoclassical style, with some medieval elements. Many of the original objects, such as gold and porcelain vases, no longer exist. The paintings covering the ceiling from the entrance to the altar, including the dome and walls, are intact. Brought from Italy and fixed in place are by Silvio Centofanti, Francisco Campanella, and Ballerini. The largest of them painted by Balleni on the ceiling shows the martyrdom of St. Sebastian; the base of the dome depicts the four evangelists; and in the dome itself the "Glory of Heaven" with eight angels. On the sides of the nave there are canvases depicting St. Peter and St. Paul. The lateral chapel, to the left, has an interesting nativity scene in natural size, with a big camel, brought from Europe by a rich family from Manaus. In the main chapel there is a beautiful statue of São Sebastião, flanked by three stained glass windows signed by Francisco Campanella. The "Via Crucis" is remarkable, with its paintings in relief. The facade has only one bell tower - the second one was never built. Some authors say that water infiltrations caused the work to stop, and that it was never restarted.

Towers

Some historians say that the foreman, who would have received the money in advance, ran away with all the money intended for the construction of the second tower. Others say that, as it was the end of the Rubber Cycle, there were no more donors with money to finish the structure. And others say that it came from Europe and sank in a ship, and another one was not ordered for lack of donors, with the end of the wealth cycle of the city. It was left to be built again, but as it ended up being known this way, no one else made it a point to continue the construction of the second tower.
