Maués bets on tourism as economic matrix

Maués currently has 297 beds in hotels and inns.

From the second half of November, the visitor who disembarks in the city of Maués (253 Km from Manaus) will have one more lodging option in the Land of Guaranáwith the implementation of the the "Bed and Breakfast" projectproject, aimed at increasing the offer of beds for tourists, and at the same time, generate up to 300 new direct and indirect jobs, during the summer season.

One of the main tourist destinations in Amazonas, Maués currently has 297 beds in hotels and inns. The project, which is part of the Incentive to Tourism Program (Print)The project, which is part of the Tourism Incentive Program (Print), created by the City Hall, through the Secretariat of Culture and Tourism (Sectur), to transform the sector into an economic matrix, has the goal of offering 150 more quality accommodations - and at a lower cost - in the homes of residents of the city and nearby communities.

The goal of the city government, which together with the State Tourism Company (Amazonastur), is developing the project, is that by the first week of December, when one of the most traditional events of the interior of the state, the 38th Guarana Festival, the "Bed and Breakfast" is fully underway, to meet the expected demand of 80 thousand people who should visit, and watch, the three days of shows with national and regional attractions, sports tournaments and participate in the primary sector business fair.

"Maués has a tourist vocation that has been much neglected by the public sector over the years, but since the beginning of 2017 we are investing to offer conditions to tourists, and also to entrepreneurs and artisans, to make tourism one of the main sources of income and employment in the municipality, along with guaraná," said the mayor of Maués, Junior Leite.

He also highlighted that in the three major events held this year - Carnival, Maués Anniversary, and Summer Festival - more than 150 thousand visitors landed in the city and no police occurrence was registered because of the investments in security and in the holding of qualification and training courses in the tourist segment.

Bed and Breakfast

The "Bed and Breakfast" system is one of the oldest lodging models. The modern concept was revived in Ireland in the 1960s and became popular throughout Europe in the following decades, arriving soon afterwards in North America.

In Brazil, it gained strength in 2010, especially in the Southeast and tourist hubs in the Northeast, with the confirmation of major events that the country would host in the following years: the World Cup (2014) and the Olympic Games (2016).

As the name suggests, the guest/tourist rents a room in the house of a local resident, where besides the accommodation, he or she is entitled to a meal, usually breakfast. According to specialists, the "Bed and Breakfast" stay can be 30% cheaper than in hotels and inns.

In the model that will be implemented in Maués, the residents interested in participating must have available in their homes rooms with bed, air conditioning, private bathroom and TV, as well as other optional services. It is also necessary to register with the Ministry of Tourism, through the Individual Micro-entrepreneur program (MEI).

"By the end of the year, the goal is to register 30 residents, with two to five beds per house. And besides the headquarters, we will evaluate the lodging in riverside and rural communities, enabling tourists to experience the daily life and experiences of traditional populations in the Amazon, such as sustainable fishing and guaraná harvesting", added Junior Leite.

Courses

The City Hall has closed yet another important partnership, within the "Maués of More Opportunities" Program. The Municipal Secretariat of Culture and Tourism, together with CETAM, opened registrations for courses related to tourism.

They are courses such as regional cuisine, tourist information (for tourist guide qualification), and photography. There are about 30 places per course and enrollment can be made at the headquarters of the Secretariat of Culture and Tourism (SECTUR) on Boa Vista street in the neighborhood Ramalho Junior.

Those interested need to bring documents such as RG, CPF, proof of education and residence. SECTUR's working hours are from 8am to 12pm and from 2pm to 5pm. The courses start on November 6.
