The Museu do Homem do Norte was inaugurated on March 13, 1985, in Manaus, by the Joaquim Nabuco Foundation and is today at the Centro Cultural dos Povos da Amazônia (CCPA). The goal, at the time of its creation, was to have a museum that could reflect the culture of the man from the north, gathering a significant collection that represented and reflected the characteristics and peculiarities of life in the northern region of Brazil, like the one that already existed in Recife, the Museu do Homem do Nordeste, with ideals of an anthropological and didactic museum inspired in the works of the sociologist and anthropologist Gilberto Freyre.

Initially, the collection consisted of regional products, such as guaraná, rubber, Brazil nuts, jute, and wood; a flour house; and regional sectors of mining, fishing, food, popular medicine, handicrafts, folklore, and popular art. Also incorporated was the ethnographic collection of Noel Nutels, a physician and sanitarian who devoted himself to the issue of indigenous health in the Xingu Park. Later, by lending, the indigenous collection was acquired from FUNAI, composed of domestic and ritual artifacts, such as basketry, ceramics, body adornments, and ritual masks and objects. The other pieces found in the collection are archeological fragments, Indian cake, spearheads and axes.

The Museu do Homem do Norte offers guided tours, in Portuguese and English, for student groups and tourists, including English, and also offers assisted tours for the visually impaired, with objects that can be touched along the way. It has an auditorium in lounge format, which houses the Cine-Video Club Silvino Santos that presents films and documentaries.

Currently, the collection of the Museu do Homem do Norte is made up of around 2,000 objects, acquired over the years through purchases, donations, cessions and incorporations. Its strength lies in the collections as a whole, for what they represent, more than in the unitary value of the pieces. The set allows a vision of the regional cultural amplitude, from the daily work techniques of the Amazon populations, to the means of transportation, the dwellings, the food, the parties, the handcraft, the religiosity, the myths and rites, besides an important archaeological collection.

The state government, through a lending contract, took over the administration of the museum and today it is at the Centro Cultural dos Povos da Amazônia (CCPA) under the responsibility of the State Secretary of Culture (SEC).
