The workshops are offered by the Municipal Secretariat for Environment and Sustainability (Semmas) and aim to encourage sustainable practices with free classes for residents of that part of the city. This first one will teach how to make African dolls made from reusing newspaper-paper and is part of the program of activities for Women's Month, held by the Manaus Solidarity Fund.
According to the instructor of the workshop, the educator Francisca Godinho, the piece is decorative and quite simple to be made, needing only newspaper, glue, scissors, a barbecue stick and a lot of creativity. "The technique used is to use newspaper straws, which are glued and folded to give shape and size to the sculpture," she explains. Once assembled, the piece can be painted or have the texture of the newspaper or magazine maintained. Francisca explains that it takes 40 straws to make a doll, which can be sold as a decorative item.
The workshops are part of the annual program held by Semmas' Environmental Education Division (Diea) at Espaço Ecam. Those interested can go there and sign up. The classes take place in the morning and afternoon shifts. The Diea also holds free classes in the communities, meeting requests made, via official letter, to the secretariat.
