On September 8, Saturday, at 7pm, the pianist Murilo Murilo Mazzotta presents, in the Noble Room of the Palácio Rio Negro Cultural Centerthe recital Minimalist Panorama. Free admission.
Mazzotta started his career at the age of 10, in his hometown, Franca, in the countryside of São Paulo. He studied piano with Lúcia Garcetti and, later, decided to become a professional pianist, moved to São Paulo to study at the Institute of Arts at the Júlio de Mesquita Filho University (Unesp). At the university, where he graduated in piano in 2009, he was a student of teachers such as Atílio Mastrogiovanni and Cláudio Richerme. He also participated in masterclasses with pianists such as Gilberto Tinetti, Eduardo Monteiro, Fernando Corvisier and Flávio Augusto. For over 10 years he has been developing a pedagogical work focused on piano teaching, which includes the production of his own method. After researching in the field of music and music teaching, he delved into the minimalist art movement. Currently, he is also dedicated to composition, producing works whose aesthetics is close to composers such as the Japanese Ryuichi Sakamoto and the American Philip Glass.
In the recital's repertoire, there are works by a predecessor of the minimalist movement: the French composer Erik Satie, who was revolutionary when he proposed a simpler musical texture in works such as Gymnopédies and the Gnossiennescomposed in the late 19th century. Philip Glass, known as one of the most celebrated minimalist composers, will be represented by four compositions. The author has created the soundtrack for several contemporary films, such as The Hours, Cassandra's Dream, The Truman Show and the Brazilian Nosso Lar. The other works presented belong to what some theorists call "post-minimalism". The Brazilian musical production will be contemplated by compositions of the interpreter himself and a work by Antônio Pinto, Brazilian composer who was a student and trainee of Philip Glass in the United States.
The main characteristics of musical minimalism are: the presence of many repetitions, the absence of a traditional melody line, short motifs, a simple harmonic reed, and moments of rhythmic lags. The style is inserted in the contemporary period, and can be understood as a reference to machines, with their periodic and constant noises that fill our daily lives with repetitions. Serial production and daily routines are also reflected in the field of musical minimalism.
