Saudade Square
A Cinco de Setembro Square in Manaus, popularly known as "Saudade Squarewas inaugurated in 1865 and was initially known as Largo da Saudade. Its limits were the Instituto de Educação do Amazonas (IEA) and the São José Cemetery, where today is the Rio Negro Club. It became a square in 1897, but only in 1932 were the gardens and sidewalks built.
The square is approximately 12.6 thousand square meters. It is bordered by the streets Epaminondas, Ramos Ferreira, Ferreira Pena and Simão Bolívar, and is located in the central area of the capital.
The official name of the Praça Cinco de Setembro was constituted in homage to the date of the Elevation of Amazonas to the category of Province, a homage also to João Batista de Figueiredo Tenreiro Aranha who fought for the emancipation of Grão-Pará.
Another fact linked to the square is the construction of a monument in honor of Bento de Figueiredo Tenreiro Aranha. The construction of the monument was proposed by councilman Silvério Nery, on May 11, 1883, when the president of the province was José Lustosa da Cunha Paranaguá.
On April 30, 2010, the Praça da Saudade was reinaugurated. The place has undergone extensive renovation and historic spaces were recovered, constituting today one of the most beautiful squares of Manaus.
Curiosities
A curious fact about the square records that at the time of the provincial government of President Francisco José Furtado in 1858, the cemetery was fenced off. At this time, the square was nothing more than a square with few trees. In 1865, a proposal was made by the City Council to build a square on the site. There is no document proving whether or not the name was approved, but what is known is that the people ended up consecrating the place with the name Saudade Square.
According to research by historian Mário Ypiranga, the name of the square may have originated also due to the presence of a Spanish surname ? 'Saudade' ? or a black man who lived around 1837, who lived in the area around the square, named Jose Pedro Saudade. The black man, according to Ypiranga, would have been a forro slave, due to the goods he owned.
In fact, the official name "September 5" never became popular. The fact is that even though the official name is inscribed on the plaque of Tenreiro Aranha's statue, the people of Manauaras know it only as "Praça da Saudade".Praça da Saudade".
