Squares Heliodoro Balbi, Roosevelt and Gonçalves Dias
Popularly known as Police Squarebecause it is located in front of the former Military Police Barracks, now the Provincial Palace Cultural Center, the Heliodoro Balbi Square has a peculiar history in the urban formation of the city of Manaus. Before it was organized as a public place, flanked by the building of the Gymnasium Dom Pedro II and the former Military Regiment, it was a piece of land that seemed destined for the population's retreat and stroll, a huge open space. Today it is the most wooded and ornamented square in the city center. During the administration of the mayor Adolpho Lisboa (1902-1908) the place was decorated with iron sculptures brought from France: Diana Huntress, Nymph, Mercury (Hermes), Dog and Boar Fighting, the only piece signed by an artist, the Frenchman Charles Theodòre Perron. These works, according to several researchers, are related to the hunting theme, very common in the Parisian squares of the late 19th century. Also worthy of note is the beautiful Art Nouveau Art Nouveauthe largest and best worked in the city.
