"George Huebner: Photographia Allemã" will haveárecords from the Misam collection.

Wealthy families, caçadores, caboclos and rubber tappers areãsome of the characters portrayed in the exhibitionção "George Huebner: Photographia Allemã". Previously scheduled to open last November, the show will be open next Tuesday (March 6) at 10 a.m. in the Collective Arts RoomThe event will be held at Sumaúma Park Shopping, in the Cidade Nova neighborhood, in the northern part of the city, and admission will be free.

Bringing together a total of 20 photographs, belonging to the iconographic collection of the Museum of Image and and Sound of Amazonas (Misam)the exhibition in the Collective Arts Room will present to the public a relevant panorama of the vast production of George Huebner (1862-1935), who became one of the main chroniclers of life in the Amazon between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. A native of Dresden, he settled in Manaus at the end of the 19th century and set up one of the main photography studios in Brazil during the period.

"In the words of Andreas Valentin (author of the book 'The Amazon Photography of George Huebner', 2012), he was a Germanão-caboclo, naturalist and sócio-correspondent of the Geographical Society of Dresden, who installed in Manaus the largest and best estúdio of photography: the Photographia Allemã", highlights Turenko Beça, visual artist and curator of the show at Sumaúma Park.

Collection

Over 50 years, Huebner collected important and varied images of daily life in Amazonia - from portraits of wealthy families in Manaus and Belé m to the record of the work in the rubber plantations, from the harsh day to day of forest workers às photographs of Indian pairs made in studio, later reproduced in postcards that impressed the recipients from other countries.

"Much of his productionção has an essentially ethnográphic view, although in the portraits of ethnográphic pairs or indigenous groups, the photographer used bows, arrows and ceremonial costumes, building sceneries with leaves, branches and painted backgrounds," says Turenko. "He thus contributes to making the European imagination about Amazánia and its fantastic reality more fantastic."

In the Belle Époque period, at the height of the Rubber Cycle, the German photographer criticizes life in the cities and rubber plantations. "He records the urban landscape, the families and the society of Manaós. But thereá alsoés a contrasting record of the brave in the forest in precarious living conditions, in the midst of extractive activity, which largely funded the wealth of the city, "says the curator.

A rare sight

Altogether, the photographs gathered in the exhibition will present the public with a small overview of the work of one of the most important names in Amazonian iconography. "Huebner's gaze is a landmark for the understanding of Amazonia at the turn of the 19th century. Not only in the aspects referring to the natural landscape, but also in the economic, cultural and social aspects," Turenko points out.

"I hope that the small cut made allows a noção of the Manaus of the 1900s. Of Amazônia in the 1900s. And even more, provide the reflectionão about the similaritiesças and diferenças for the Manaus and the Amazônia of the século 21."

"George Huebner: Photographia Allemã" é an accomplishmentção of the Government of Amazonas, through the State Secretariat of Culture (SEC), with support from the north zone shopping center. The show is on display until April 29, 2018, with free visitationçãfrom Monday to Saturday, from 10am àto 10pm, and on Sundays and holidays, from 2pm àto 8pm, according to the Sumaúma Park store hours.

Trajectory

Born Georg Hübner in Dresden in 1862, was one of the main photographers of the second generation of Europeans who settled in Brazil. With an eye of rare sensitivity, he recorded images of several indigenous Amazonian ethnic groups - many now extinct - and the illustrious and unknown figures of the two great metropolises of the region in the rubber age, Manaus and Belém.

After settling in Manaus at the end of the 19th century, the photographer latinized his name, from then on spelled as "George Huebner". Between 1899 and 1900, he opened the studioê Photographia Allemã, on São Vicente Street (currently Bernardo Ramos Street), in front of the Government Palace.

In 1902, Huebner associates with Libânio do Amaral, professor of the Academia Amazonense de Belas Artes, and together they inaugurate the new headquarters of the Photographia Allemã, on the avenue Eduardo Ribeiro, at the height of Henrique Martins, with the signature G. Huebner & Amaral.

In 1908, the Photographia Allemã receives the Grand Prix of the National Exhibition of Rio de Janeiro, where Huebner exhibited works of his estates in Manaus and Belém, and his trip by the region as official photographer next to the governor Constantino Nery, held in 1906.
