Sambista Chapinha da Vela performs in Manaus on the 10th

He will sing the best samba de raiz at Pagode dos Amigos at General Glicério.

The emotion and energy of the already traditional and famous Samba da Vela from São Paulo disembark in Manaus on Friday, 10/8, bringing one of its founders, the singer Chapinha da Vela. He will sing the best samba from the roots in the Pagode dos Amigos da General Glicériolocated at the Jety Lava Jato car wash station on Av. Castelo Branco, 373, in the Cachoeirinha neighborhood, near Bar do Carvalho.

The Comunidade Samba da Vela is a samba group founded in the city of São Paulo in 2000 and one of the most important cultural movements in São Paulo samba today. The community provides a space for samba singers to promote their compositions, making this meeting a true cult of what is most genuine in Brazilian culture.

Chapinha da Vela

"Samba was born in me," says José Marilton da Cruzbetter known as Chapinha. Born in the countryside of the District of Uruburetama, the composer left Ceará in search of a better life in São Paulo, and ended up becoming one of the greatest references of São Paulo samba.

The taste for samba is in his blood, he guarantees. His father and uncles formed a samba and choro group, genres that they had contact with through the radio. "I believe they listened to Pixinguinha, Clara Nunes, Francisco Alves," says Chapinha.

The native of Ceará arrived in São Paulo in the 1970s. He sought to get to know the main points of samba in the capital and, around 1978, he began to frequent the Vai-Vai square, where he met bambas such as Geraldo Filme, Osvaldinho da Cuíca, and Almir Guineto.

Although he was a talented composer, he faced several obstacles to be recognized. Among them, the discrimination for being a northeasterner that, in his words, still happens today. However, determined to enter the universe of samba, Chapinha sought support through his studies. In 1980, he started taking singing lessons at the Bandeirante Conservatory, in Santo Amaro.

Two years later, he embraced the opportunity that was placed before him. He was invited to join the Wing of Composers of Vai-Vai and soon became President of the school. He held the position for 20 years, an experience that yielded lessons and a transforming perception, which changed the course of his life: Chapinha saw himself empowered to do more for the periphery and for samba.
