Inaugurated at the end of the 20th century, on December 31st, 1896, without its construction and decoration being completely finished, the Teatro Amazonas is the most evident expression of the wealth experienced by the city of Manaus between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Propitiated by the exploitation of rubber in the Amazon, the Province of Amazonas was highly privileged by the economic situation it found itself in at the time, a period that became known forever in Brazilian socioeconomic history as the Rubber Cycle. However, the Teatro Amazonas is considered the most expressive example of audacious projects implemented in the city of Manaus during this period.

Activities developed
The Teatro Amazonas, since its inauguration in 1896, has seen all kinds of shows presented on its stage: operas, operettas, musicals, plays, shows of lyrical and popular singers, festivals, dance groups, brass bands, choirs, orchestras, and many others.
But besides being a show house, it is a place of fundamental references for the city. Here the function of theater goes hand in hand with the function of place of memory, of cultural heritage, and of museum.
Strictly speaking, the entire Teatro Amazonas is a museum. Being this a special space reserved to the memory of the city of Manaus
Its route runs along the Theater itself and the rooms on the first and third floors, where the history, told through the Museum, is integrated and completed by the physical and monumental presence of the Theater.
