
In order to meet health demands in riverside communities in the interior of Amazonas, the State University of Amazonas (UEA) signed, on Tuesday (30/1), an agreement with the Brazilian Navythrough the 9th Naval District Command. The document establishes that the students of Medicine course of UEA will provide medical assistance using the naval structure and logistics. The officialization of the technical cooperation took place at the Command of the 9th Naval District, in the street Bernardo Ramos s/n, Center.
The dean of UEA, Cleinaldo Costa, highlighted the sum of interests of both institutions. "This is a great opportunity in which our students and faculty join forces with the crew of Navy ships to bring health to remote locations in the Amazon," he explained. The joint work should begin by the beginning of next semester.
Cleinaldo also added that the university's telemedicine service will drastically reduce the distance between medical specialists and the population located in isolated communities. "This is, in many cases, decisive in saving lives," he added.
For the Vice-Admiral of the 9th Naval District Command, Carlos Alberto Matias, the moment is important to strengthen the actions of the Ships of Hope program, which will be reinforced by the university, at no cost to both institutions.
In the official text of the agreement nº 88000/2018-001/00 the joint work foresees health assistance in riverside communities, through consultations, hospital care, education and awareness, immunization, teaching, and research.
Ships of Hope
The Ships of Hope of the Navy have been providing medical care to riverine and indigenous communities of the Amazon for more than 20 years. The crew is composed mainly of doctors, dentists, nurses and health technicians, who travel long distances to provide consultations and care.
