Amazonas Public Library
The building of Manaus' current public library, located at Rua Barroso, No. 57 - Center, began to be built during the government of Antônio Constantino Nery. It was inaugurated on October 5, 1910. The building has a neoclassical style. The stairs and columns came from Scotland, the marble boleon, the crystal chandeliers, and the tiled skylight came from England.
In the beginning, the library was frequented by the cultural and social elite of the time. Teachers, lawyers, doctors, magistrates, priests, and merchants. At this time its collection included valuable and rare encyclopedias. But with the economic stagnation in which Amazonas was plunged, as a consequence of the fall of rubber prices, the Library suffered a great shaking, unable to renew its collection and acquire new works.
In the early morning of August 22, 1945, a fire completely destroyed the Library's assets. Only 60 books that were in an exhibit outside the building were saved. Governor Álvaro Botelho Maia reopened the building with a collection of 45,000 volumes, Álvaro Maia himself donated 2,500 volumes to the library. The rest came from voluntary donations.
Since it was inaugurated, the library has undergone four renovations, both in structure and in the conservation of its collection. And, currently, it is quite frequented by all social classes. Students, researchers and teachers make use of its collection. The library also has a large collection of old newspapers that are available for consultation.
Developed Activities
With the reopening of the building and the return of its public utilities, the library has been offering its users contemporary activities, providing more complete services to the public in general.
The library has a Gibiteca, which, besides bringing culture to readers, contributes to the dissemination of art through comics, also serving as a support for the insertion of young people and adults in the world of reading.
A multipurpose space was also created to hold lectures, exhibitions, autographs, and to promote literary art projects that include young writers and professionals in the area, based on a pedagogical proposal of art-education in experimental projects.
It offers multimedia access to its content, through audios, animations and videos of several themes, making some searches easier because they are digitalized.
Users can count on a detailed accessibility project that brings the signals with braille reading and libras drawing.
Besides these services, there will also be computerized client registers, electronic control of collections, home loans, and integration with other public libraries in the state.
