Brazil and Mexico draw up plan for cooperation in tourism

Increasing the flow of tourists and the number of flights between the countries were some of the measures discussed

The Minister of Tourism, Marcelo Álvaro Antônio, met this Thursday (2/13) with the Mexican ambassador in Brazil, José Ignácio Piña Rojas. The objective of the meeting was to elaborate a cooperation plan to increase the flow of tourists between the two countries, increase the frequency of flights and strengthen integrated tourism.

One of the proposals discussed during the meeting was the need to create direct weekly flights between the capital Brasilia and Mexico and the review of the air services agreement of the two countries, signed in 2011. The exchange of successful tourism experiences, implementation of best practices and positioning in the global market were also discussed at the meeting.

Also on the occasion, the ambassador presented the plan to promote tourism and boost the Mexico brand for the next four years, in order to strengthen tourism in the country, increase the number of international visitors, diversify the issuing markets, strengthen sustainable tourism practices and work on the country's positioning in the global tourism market.

The minister emphasized the importance of increasing connectivity with Mexico, a tourist destination of extreme relevance for Brazilian tourists and for the world. "We have similarities in our tourist attractions, such as gastronomy, culture, and natural beauty. We have to join forces to leverage tourism internationally, generating jobs, income, and social inclusion," said Álvaro Antônio.

The meeting was also attended by Minister Luís Ángel Dominguez Brito and Counselor Marco Antonio Huerta Sánchez, both from the Mexican Embassy in Brazil, and the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Daniel Diniz Nepomuceno.

Flow

In 2019, Brazil received 82,918 Mexican tourists, an increase of 3.8% over the previous year. In recent years, about 50% of them visited the country for business, with 89% stating that the trip fully met or exceeded their expectations and another 93% intend to return to Brazil.

In Mexico, Brazil is the 5th main source of international tourists, behind only the United States, Canada, Colombia and the United Kingdom. From 2007 to 2017, the number of Brazilians frequenting the country increased by more than 500%. According to the World Tourism Organization (WTO), in 2018, Mexico was the 7th country in the ranking of the top international tourist destinations.
