Metropolitan Cathedral of Manaus

The first church erected after the foundation of Manaus, the Matriz de Nossa Srª. da Conceição (Metropolitan Cathedral), was built in 1695 by Carmelite missionaries. It was a simple and rustic construction. The work was rebuilt by the then president of the province, Manoel da Gama Lobo d'Almada, who expanded its facilities. In 1850, the church was completely destroyed by a fire. Twenty years passed between the laying of the cornerstone and its inauguration. The current building of the new Matriz church was inaugurated in 1878. Its construction is quite simple, with predominantly straight lines in neoclassical style.
The facade is divided into two floors, with few ornamental elements. The church's six bells were imported from Portugal and installed in 1875. Until today, the church maintains a prominent position in the downtown landscape.
Located on a small hill, in front of the Port, the Cathedral was the first great architectural work done in Manaus.
Facing the Negro River, with its beautiful staircases that suggest the design of a lyre, the building impresses by its beauty and sobriety.
