The Museu da Cidade de Manaus occupies the historic Paço da Liberdade in the Centro. Construction began in 1874 to house municipal public authorities. The building features neoclassical characteristics, although it was built during the rubber era. It serves as a memory space for Manauara identity.
History and Architecture of the Paço
The monument is neoclassical. Its facade features Tuscan-style columns, which highlight the Manaus municipality shield on the central portico. The building served as the seat of the Provincial Government in 1879. It consists of only one floor.
The construction is old. Paço da Liberdade sits across from Praça Dom Pedro II, where it preserves the wealth of the rubber boom. The museum officially opened on 24 de outubro de 2018.
Exhibitions and Collection
The space contains eight rooms. Visitors find interactive technologies, archaeological pieces, and regional items that narrate the capital's history. The Arqueologia room offers a virtual reality tour through the region's past. Other environments show the rainy season cycle and the lives of former mayors.
