Praça Cinco de Setembro occupies the heart of the Centro Histórico. Popularly called Praça da Saudade, it covers 12,600 square meters of urban area. The site opened in 1865 when the region functioned only as a sparsely wooded clearing. Its official name honors the elevation of Amazonas to the status of a Province.
History and Naming
The popular name prevails. Although the official title is Cinco de Setembro, residents of Manaus use the term Saudade due to cultural tradition. This nickname may have originated from a resident named José Pedro Saudade who lived nearby around 1837. The site officially became a square in 1897 after the Câmara Municipal proposed constructing the space on the site.
Monuments mark the ground. The monument honoring Bento de Figueiredo Tenreiro Aranha was proposed by councilman Silvério Nery in 1883. This structure celebrates the struggle for the emancipation of Grão-Pará. The square underwent a major renovation that concluded on April 30, 2010.
Location and Access
The square is central. It is situated on Rua Ramos Ferreira in the Centro of Manaus. The space borders Rua Epaminondas, Ferreira Pena, and Simão Bolívar. Visitors can access the site at any time because it operates 24 hours a day. The area provides accessibility for people with disabilities.
