Dom Pedro II Square

Praça Dom Pedro II is located in the Centro district. This public space opened in 1897 on Avenida Sete de Setembro. People previously called the site Largo do Pelourinho because a stone or wooden pillar served to punish criminals during the provincial period.

History and Heritage

The land has archaeological origins. The square was built over an ancient indigenous cemetery discovered in the late 19th century. The iron bandstand, known as Chalet de Ferro, arrived from Liverpool in 1882 while the company Francis Morton & Cia handled the assembly in 1888.

The fountain is made of bronze. It opened in 1894 during the administration of Governor Eduardo Ribeiro. Cast iron railings that once surrounded the site were removed in 1907 to be installed at the entrance of Mercado Adolpho Lisboa.

Historical Surroundings

Important buildings surround the square. Paço da Liberdade functioned as the city hall, while the Iapetec building currently houses the INSS. This structure became the first skyscraper in Manaus after its construction in the 1950s.

Ruins exist nearby. The ruins of Hotel Cassina became Cabaré Chinelo after the rubber crisis affected the region. Palácio Rio Branco is also located near this public space.
