Largo Gallery - Visual Arts Center

Largo Gallery

The Galeria do Largo was inaugurated on November 4th, 2005, during the 2nd Amazonas Film Festival, with an exhibition of historical film posters from Brazilian cinema.

In December of the same year, the space opened its doors as a commercial public gallery with the exhibition "Visões Contemporâneas" (Contemporary Visions) by the plastic artists Sergio Cardoso, Jair Jacqmont, and Otoni Mesquita. Today, the Galeria do Largo is a reference space for contemporary art and is equipped to receive small and large exhibitions.

History

In 1942 this property belonged to the Mattos Areosa family, where the Governor of the State of Amazonas Danilo Duarte de Mattos Areosa lived, who commanded the State's destiny from 1967 to 1971.

In 1957, Mr. Newton de Menezes Vieiralves lived there. He held several public positions in the city of Manaus, such as Secretary of Finance, Secretary of Justice, Secretary of Planning, and Attorney General.

In 1985, the building became property of Construtora Rayol, whose headquarters operated there until mid-2005, and was later rented to the State Government, to be inserted in the revitalization project of the Largo de São Sebastião, to operate the Visual Arts Center - "Galeria do Largo", a reference space for contemporary art.
