Museum of the Indian

O Indian Museum in Manaus is the largest and most extensive museum of indigenous history in Brazil. The museum has in its collection about three thousand pieces produced by Amazonian tribes. Among the objects are household utensils, weapons, ornaments, and musical instruments. It is maintained by the Congregation of the Salesian Sisters of Manaus.

It was founded in 1952, an action attributed to the missionary sister Maddalena Mazzone, and has a collection of more than 3,000 thousand pieces from the indigenous universe of the people of the upper Negro River. The collection is distributed in six rooms that present materials that tell about the indigenous way of life through their adornments, utensils, instruments. In the rooms, one can obtain, through the materials on display, a vision of the life of men and women in the village environment. The Collection was built during the Salesian missions among the Tukano, Yanomani and other ethnic groups.

The Museum has a small library, focused on the theme of the indigenous peoples. The space is open to the public.

"The funeral ritual, the ritual of the magpie and the blowpipe, to catch the hunted animal, are the ones that cause most curiosity in the visitors.

The funeral ritual consists of a dancing ceremony where the dead person is placed inside his canoe and is celebrated by the other members of the tribe. It is a ritual where death is celebrated joyfully. Soon after, the body inside the canoe is left in the river to be carried away by the waters."

Some of the pieces exhibited in the museum are centuries old and were donated by archeologists. Other objects on display are originally made by indigenous people from the Upper Rio Negro tribes. The collection is on display for educational, research, and tourist purposes.

Visits are made together with a guide who explains the collection and tells all about the indigenous tribes of the upper Negro River.
