Mindu Municipal Park
It was legally established through Municipal Law n° 219 of November 11th, 1993. It has 40.8 hectares of biodiversity in the heart of Manaus and is about 15 minutes from the city center.
The Mindu Municipal Park is one of the four Conservation Units, a showcase of flora, fauna, and other elements of the Amazonian ecosystem. The goal of the park is to promote and develop environmental and cultural activities with the purpose of providing moments of community integration, allowing to awaken the surrounding residents and visitors to socio-environmental and cultural issues regarding the appreciation of the park.
The Park also offers visitors a structure that includes an amphitheater, restrooms, libraries - with a collection of about 2,000 books, straw hats, snack bars, and trails. The Municipal Secretariat of Environment - Semmasresponsible for managing the Mindu Park, also holds specific programs at the site, according to its schedule.
The name "Mindu" is a reference to one of the city's best known streams. It is the longest igarapé of Manaus. It is precisely in the margins of the Park that it is most visible, struggling to escape from environmental impacts and pollution.
The Mindu Park was created as a result of a popular movement in 1989, by the residents of the Parque Dez neighborhood, as a way to protect the habitat of the Collared Sauim (Saguinus bicolor) or Sauim-de-Manaus, primate that today is the city's mascot and is threatened with extinction.
