Throughout its 53 years, the CIGS Zoo serves our society, dedicating itself to conservation and environmental protection, as well as sustainable development.
O Jungle Warfare Instruction Center Zoo - "CIGS Zoo - was created in 1967 to meet the needs of the CIGS Jungle Operations Courses (COS). The current Amazon Center for Fauna and Flora Research (CPFFA) has become a national reference in wild animal medicine and a tourist attraction, the second most visited in the city of Manaus. It has a differentiated structure in human and material resources, being managed directly by the CIGS. It has a Veterinarian Division and a biologist, all with academic training directed to medicine of Amazonian wild animals, including masters and doctors.
The "CIGS Zoo" has only Brazilian Amazonian animals (jaguar, hyacinth macaw, royal hawk, capuchin monkey, and black panther, among others), which enjoy a balanced diet and routine veterinary treatment.
Several species that are part of the collection are classified in IBAMA's various categories of threats of extinction. As an example, jaguars, which live a maximum of 10 years in the wild, reach 21 years at the "CIGS Zoo".
It is the only zoo in the Amazon that is able to house 469 animals of the Amazon fauna from environmental agencies, including 34 birds, 58 mammals, 112 reptiles and 265 fish. About 140,000 people visit its facilities every year. Of this expressive number, 40,000 students from Manaus' schools have free access, due to a partnership with the Municipal Education Secretary, aiming at environmental education. Among its activities, it considers fundamental the awareness of children, youth and adults about the importance of biodiversity conservation and the preservation of endangered species.
In 2014, it was among the 25 best zoos and aquariums in South America, winning the Travelers' ChoiceTM Zoos and Aquariums award, from TripAdvisor®, the world's largest travel website. The CIGS zoo ranked 10th in Brazil and 14th in South America.
Recently, a space called "Oca do Conhecimento Ambiental" was built, in partnership with the Specialized Court for Environment and Agrarian Issues (VEMAQA), in order to disseminate knowledge about environmental education. The initiative is coordinated by CIGS and the Municipal Secretariat of Education.
