The Biblioteca Pública do Amazonas is a cultural landmark in Centro de Manaus. This neoclassical building opened on October 5, 1910, during the administration of Antônio Constantino Nery. Decorative elements like columns and staircases arrived from Scotland, while crystal chandeliers and the skylight were imported from England. The space preserves local history.
History and reconstruction
The heritage site suffered severe losses. A fire destroyed the building during the early hours of August 22, 1945, so only 60 books on display were saved from the tragedy. Governor Álvaro Botelho Maia later reopened the structure. He donated 2,500 volumes to help rebuild the collection to 45,000 works.
Collection and services
The library serves diverse audiences. The Salão Thalia Phedra Borges dos Santos houses about 35,000 volumes of general knowledge across a 280 square meter area. In the Genesino Braga hall, users find Amazonian collections and rare works. The site also offers a Gibiteca and multimedia access to facilitate digital research.
Accessibility is a priority here. The project includes Braille signage and Libras drawings to ensure use by everyone. Visitors can use free Wi-Fi while performing readings or academic research in the space.
Visitation information
Access is completely free. The unit operates Monday to Friday, from 08:00 to 17:00. The official address is Rua Barroso, 57, in the Centro neighborhood. Guided tours are possible if the user makes a prior appointment.
