Palácio Rio Negro serves as a museum in the Centro of Manaus. The original construction dates to 1903, serving as a private residence for German merchant Karl Waldemar Scholz. The building displays eclectic architecture while preserving period furniture within its traditional rooms. This historic space reflects the wealth of the Rubber Cycle in Amazonas.
History and Architecture
The mansion is eclectic. Karl Scholz built the property to live in during the peak of rubber exploitation in the region. The owner lost the asset in an auction after the rubber trade crisis, so the government acquired the property in 1918 for 200 contos de réis.
It served as a government headquarters. Between 1918 and 1959, the building functioned as the official residence for state governors. The building maintains antique furniture.
