São Sebastião Church

The Igreja de São Sebastião is a historical landmark in Centro de Manaus. The temple features a neoclassical style with medieval elements. Construction began in 1888 under the direction of Gesualdo Machetti de Lucas, although the project faced delays after the Proclamação da República because state funding was cut.

History and Architecture

The building is a protected site. This heritage status was recognized by Decreto nº 11038 on April 12, 1988. The facade features only one bell tower since the second tower was never built due to lack of funds or potential financial misappropriation.

Paintings decorate the ceiling. Artists Sílvio Centofanti, Francisco Campanella, and Ballerini brought these works from Italy for installation on-site. Ballerini's painting in the dome depicts the Glory of Heaven with eight angels while the evangelists appear at the base of the structure.
