Municipal Market Adolpho Lisboa

The Mercado Municipal Adolpho Lisboa is an architectural landmark of iron in Manaus. Located in the Centro, the building dates back to the Rubber Era between 1880 and 1913. It serves as a traditional marketplace for regional products. The space houses typical Amazonian items while preserving its national historical value.

History and construction

Work began on August 2, 1882. The firm Backus & Brisbin started construction in the Bairro dos Remédios to build this iron and masonry market. President of the Province José Paranaguá inaugurated the central pavilion on July 15, 1883, because the city required a modern space for commerce. The supporting columns bear the inscription “FRANCIS MORTON, ENGINEERS, LIVERPOOL”, which proves the English origin of the materials used.

The building grew gradually. In 1906, the Rua dos Barés facade received eclectic style improvements under Mayor Adolpho Guilherme de Miranda Lisboa. New cast iron pavilions were acquired from the Scottish firm Walter Macfarlane to meet rising local demand. The Pavilhão das Tartarugas emerged in 1909 in the southern courtyard for the sale of turtles.
